PREVIOUSLY ON BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: As Buffy and Giles discussed taking their relationship to a more intimate level, Ethan took several members of the Coven hostage with the intention of draining their magicks. As part of this dark ritual, he murdered Lessa, using her blood to activate the spell.
Willow was also taken hostage, but as she fought Ethan their energies mixed and she learned of his interest in Dawn. Willow finally managed to break free, but not before Coven members Katrina and Sarah had lost their lives and Deborah and Elspeth were severely weakened.
In his desperation to escape, Ethan tried to shoot Willow, but Jo saved her life at the possible cost of her own.
